Drugs & Alcohol - HIMS

Substance abuse, dependence, and addiction is a disease.  The FAA and airlines have recognized the need and benefit to having pilots recover from addiction and step back into the cockpit to resume piloting duties.  The FAA utilizes the Human Intervention and Motivation Study (HIMS) program for helping pilots recover and to assure that they will be safe for future piloting duties.

The details of a case matter regarding the level of concern and how to proceed.  When a pilot's case falls into a higher concern category, it is more likely to require going through the HIMS Process.  When this is the case, my goal is to make sure the pilot has a clear view of what may lay ahead of them so there are minimal, if any, surprises as they move forward.  To accomplish this, I have constructed an in-depth video series that is part of my consultation process for HIMS cases.

The Category of your Case

To begin, determine what category your case falls within (based on the details of your case), Category A, B, or C and determine what action to take.  Note: the term 'Event' refers to a DUI/OWI/OVI, arrest, administrative action, etc. related to drug and/or alcohol possession, transportation, consumption, etc.

Category A - Case Already Reviewed by the FAA - Low Concern

  History:

  • Drug or alcohol related event(s) previously reported to FAA and written proof from the FAA that monitoring is not required

  Pilot Action:

  • Bring correspondence from the FAA related to your condition to your AME for review

Category B - Medium Concern

  History:

  • Single event 5 or more years ago with Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) less than 0.15

  Pilot Action:

Category C - High Concern

  History:

  • A single event (DUI/OWI/OVI, arrest, administrative action, etc.) less than 5 years ago

  • A single event at any time with Unknown BAC, Refused BAC/breathalyzer

  • A single event at any time with a BAC of 0.15 or above

  • Two or more events during a pilot's lifetime

  • A single event along with other Drug related charges

  • History of dependence or substance use disorder

Pilot Action - The HIMS Process Video series and Phone consultation is the next step.

Consultation

1. HIMS Process Video Series

The HIMS Process Video series is composed of 3 videos.  It is a deep dive into the HIMS process and what is involved.  If you fall into the high concern category and are only looking to learn about the HIMS process before proceeding (without a phone consultation), I offer the video series alone as an option.  Some of the topics covered by the video series include:

  • Reporting Requirements

  • The HIMS Program

  • HIMS Specialists

  • Definitions and Terms

  • General Considerations

  • Detailed Description of the Stages of the HIMS Process

  • Time Frame for Each Stage

  • The Initial Special Issuance Authorization Letter

  • Costs Involved

2. Phone Consultation

The Phone Consultation provides the opportunity to discuss the details of your case, discuss the details of my practice, and to determine possible pathways for moving forward.  The HIMS Process Video Series should be viewed prior to the Phone Consultation in order to maximize your time during the call.

Consultation Options

Realizing that one size does not fit all, I offer the following options for pilots regarding HIMS Consultation:

  • HIMS Process Video Series - $150

  • HIMS Process Video Series + 30-minute Phone Consultation - $675

  • HIMS Process Video Series + 50-minute Phone Consultation - $975

How This Works

  1. When a consultation is purchased, provide a valid email address and phone number.

  2. A secure link to the Video Series will be sent to the provided email address within 24 hours.

  3. Watch the video - The link expires in 48 hours of being sent - Make sure to check your spam folder - Take notes and write down questions you may have for the phone consultation.

  4. After purchase, phone consultation date and time can be established.

  5. During the phone consultation, we can discuss the details of your case and review possible pathways for moving forward.

  6. If you would like to then move forward with the HIMS process, take next steps for Dr. Olson's HIMS AME services.

Copyright - The HIMS Process Video Series is protected under Copyright Law of the United States and related laws contained in Title 17 of the United States Code.  It is proprietary property.  Any copying, reproduction, or distribution is strictly illegal.  Violators will be prosecuted.
